Seasonal Fabric Care: Protecting Your Home Year-Round

Your home's fibers face different challenges throughout the year. Humidity in summer, dry heat in winter, and the seasonal transitions bring distinct threats to upholstery, rugs, curtains, and textiles. A thoughtful seasonal routine helps you stay ahead of these challenges and extend the life of everything in your home.
Spring: Fresh Start and Deep Cleaning
Spring is the ideal time for comprehensive fabric care. Open windows to air out rooms and reduce musty odors that build up over winter. Vacuum all upholstered pieces thoroughly, getting into seams and crevices where dust accumulates. Check curtains and drapes for dust buildup and gently brush or vacuum them. This is also an excellent time to address any winter stains before they set permanently.
Summer: Protection from Sun and Humidity
Summer sun fades colors and can weaken fibers, especially delicate ones like silk. Use sheer curtains or blinds to filter intense afternoon light in rooms with significant sun exposure. Humidity encourages mildew and mold growth in damp areas, so ensure proper ventilation in bedrooms and living spaces. Consider running dehumidifiers if your home tends toward dampness. Summer storms mean higher moisture levels indoors, making this a good season to be extra vigilant about water damage.
Fall: Preparation and Inspection
As heating season approaches, the air becomes drier, which can affect certain fibers. Check all your fabrics for any damage that accumulated during summer. Address stains promptly before the heating season makes cleaning conditions less ideal. This is also when to inspect for any pest damage or wear that might need attention before winter.
Winter: Humidity Control and Preventative Care
Heated indoor air becomes very dry in winter. Maintain consistent humidity levels—too little dryness can cause fiber brittleness and cracking, while too much humidity encourages mold. Regular vacuuming becomes more important as heating systems circulate dust. Rotate furniture periodically to ensure even wear and sun exposure.
Year-Round Habits
Regardless of season, establish basic habits: vacuum regularly, fluff cushions, keep foods and drinks away from upholstered areas, and address spills immediately. These simple practices prevent most damage before it starts.
